Oosik (pronounced “oooh sick”) is a term used in Native Alaska cultures to describe the baculum of walruses, seals, sea lions, and polar bears. The baculum is a bone found in the penis of most mammals. It is absent in humans. The baculum varies widely in shape in and size; some are spiked or barbed, some curved. No two species’ are alike, and they are not proportional to an animal’s size. The largest mammal penis fossil in the world is believed to be the 4.5 feet long walrus baculum, sold at auction in 2007 for $8000 to the company that runs the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museums.
