Sometime during the Cretaceous Period (144-65 million years ago) the Great Salt Lake of Utah was part of a much bigger sea, extended all the way from the area which is now the Gulf of Mexico. One of the most prized treasures to have formed in the geologic aftermath of this once great ocean are the metamorphed geodes which formed from ancient balls of mud. As the ocean receded, these mud balls were left to dry and crack, eventually to be filled in with minerals such as calcite (yellow), aragonite (brown) and sometimes even pyrite. These specimens are Septarian, derived from the Latin septum (something that encloses). A distinct tortoise shell pattern forms from the thin wall of calcite which transforms into aragonite, dividing the inner cystal-filled cavity from the shale exterior. These interesting, rune-like patterns have been described as “dragon’s skin” and “turtlebacks”.
