Scrimshaw Lockback

$39.95$43.95

440 Stainless Steel folding knife with a single blade. Hand done scrimshaw artwork by Dennis Sims of Houston Alaska.

Description

Scrimshaw is the old and beautiful art form of carving or engraving on ivory or bone, then highlighting the design with pigment. In the days of old, a sailing needle on whale’s teeth was darkened with candle black, soot, or tobacco juice as a way to pass the time on the high seas. Eventually it gave way to today’s fine engravers on fossilized ivory and synthetic composites, darkened with inks and patinas.

Dennis Sims, of Houston Alaska learned the art of scrimshaw through native Alaskan carver Leonard Savage in 1976. He has won several juried art shows since then. Here he has enhanced a manufactured knife by doing scrimshaw artwork by hand in various Alaskan characters. The blade is made with sharp 440 Stainless Steel.

Available in black and white and/or colored styles out of the following Alaskan characters: Husky, Orca, Otter, Humpback Whale, Eagle (soaring and profile), Wolf, Bear & Salmon (varies).
